Jaymi Nguyen is a private in the Terran Expeditionary Force, serving as an infantryman in the 9th Commando Brigade. I've always appreciated military science fiction written by people who have actually served: Joe Haldeman's "Forever War;" Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers;" and Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" are a few of my favorites. I think it's hard to really get military culture and write from a soldier's perspective unless you were actually in the military: it's a whole mindset that most people don't have unless it's forced on them.It this tradition, Tyvan Rollins's "Centurion" meets those same standards. The author, who served in Afghanistan, writes with the authority and understanding that only an infantry paratrooper could lend to a story set in a far-flung future, with young orbitally-inserted soldiers thrust into a conflict with an alien people. No one truly knows exactly what is happening in the war: the soldiers understand their basic objectives; and the civilians at home know little but what they overhear. The military brass is just as hard to understand as the alien enemy!
Throughout the novel, what really shone is not the scenes of combat and carnage, but the stories of the troops' downtime: getting a short R&R; bunking down at night before their next scheduled mission; and getting roped into details for no other purpose than to keep them busy. It reminded me a lot of my service, and the weird little things I remember having to do that I never thought would be a memory.
When I buy a book from a new author, I usually expect a decent story that could use some editing, shortening, and clarifying. Kind of like a gemstone: it's all rough, but you can see it could be worth something. If you just work at it enough, maybe it'll be worth something one day.
This novel, however, needs no polishing: it's ready for your enjoyment from the get-go.

This book is amazing. I first heard about this book when a friend told me Tyvan was doing a reading of his book ( I live in the same town as him). I went to the reading and immediately became intrigued in the book. I talked to him about it and what I thought, then didn't think about the book for a few months.
When I saw a few copies of it in a local bookstore a few months later, I immediately bought a copy. I started the book the next day and could not put it down. It was very enrapturing, keeping me hooked an entire day and making me not want to do anything else but finish it. But enough of that. Here is what I liked and disliked
Likes
1. To me, someone who has never served or had anyone close to me serve in the military, the interactions between soldiers seemed very authentic. I've read a fair amount of other books that were in a military setting, but after reading Centurion I don't feel like any of them got it quite right. The way the interactions in Centurion were written just seemed spot on. Rather than glossing over certain interactions, Centurion included them all. Downtime interactions, shore leave, intimate relationships. It seemed to me that every detail of military life was included, rather than just combat situations or formal interactions with a CO that seem to dominate most military-based books.
2. Combat situations were very well done in this book. Not only did Centurion address combat itself, but it included mindsets of soldiers in combat. It included how soldiers have to deal with the loss of their comrades on the battlefield. I feel Tyvan did an amazing job at capturing the intensity of combat. Again, this is coming from someone with no military experience, but a lot of the combat scenes in Centurion had me feeling the intensity, making me feel like I was IN that firefight.
3. I loved the character development in this book. The book is not long by any means, only 350 pages, but there was a LOT o character development. As the events of the book unfolded, you could see how each character was affected by them. You could see the changes in a character's attitude and demeanor by the situations they were put in.
4. I always appreciate a book without plot armor. Plot armor, for those that do not know the term, is the idea that a character cannot die because they are integral to the plot. A good example of this would be that while reading the Harry Potter series, you know that Harry, Ron, and Hermione will not die because they are important to the plot. Centurion doesn't do that. Plot armor means nothing to Tyvan Rollins. I don't want to expand on this point any more, because I feel like this would be the easiest spot to give away spoilers. That being said...
Dislikes
1. Why did you have to play with my heart like that Tyvan!? Get all my hopes up, just to dash them away in one chapter! He bounds, light changes colors.... I didn't believe it for the next few chapters. I didn't WANT to believe it. It hurt. But it hurt so good,
Let's be real. When my only dislike with a book is that the author made me feel, almost made me cry to be honest, you know the book is good. If you like military sci-fi, just like sci-fi in general, just like good books, or hell if you just like to read, this is a book I would highly recommend. This book left me wanting more than the 350 pages I was given. It is an outstanding read. But be prepared. Tyvan Rollins' Centurion will ruthlessly sucker punch you in the heart. But you'll come out of it glad that you read it.
I highly recommmend this book. Very hard to put down once you have started reading this novel. Demonstrates some of the hardships soldiers face in today's military.
For a young authors first book, i'm very impressed with the work. Rollins creates a futuristic story, but with the believe-ability and authenticity of someone who has first hand military experience.
This is a great read. It should definitely be in your fiction collection, especially if you consider yourself a fan of military related stories. It's well written, thoughtful, and flows really well through the story.
Great story, written in a fresh, original voice. Look forward to more from this author.
From the very beginning, the book catches your attention and draws you in. Having been written in first person, present tense, the book gives you a very unique and realistic idea of what infantry men and women face in combat. Although the book is based on fictional characters, you begin to understand that their emotions and responses to facing combat are probably quite similar to that of real modern day soldiers. I think that having a military background has allowed the author to more accurately portray situations of combat and the mentality of a soldier. I most certainly believe that a veteran will always have the upper hand when writing and developing a military or combat based storyline. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish and hope to see a sequel in the near future.
